Imagine an evening every week surrounded by friends and family, sharing some restful time just being. No little voice telling you you should be doing something productive. No pressure to entertain. No agenda of activities to do. Imagine just being together, perhaps sharing a meal, playing a game, conversing. Imagine a time when you give yourself permission to do homework or return that business call later, leave the dishes in the sink, or contemplate your navel, all for the sake of resting and renewing your soul with the ones you love, or all by yourself. Now imagine you suddenly perceive God resting in and among you, requiring nothing from you but your presence. What a gift of well-being! This is Sabbath and a foretaste of the kingdom of heaven.
Sabbath is indeed a gift, given by God as one of "the Ten Best Ways to live." Funny how we find this wonderful gift of peace so hard to receive from God that God had to command that we keep it! "Honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy."
In our busy lives, with all its demand, we are reluctant to make the gift of Sabbath rest a regular part of our schedule. We think we can't rest until all our work is done (which is never). We act as if we are unworthy of rest unless we justify our existence with doing. We forget that God created us human beings not human doings. God wants to remind us of this fact by offering us time for deep rest and refreshment one day in seven. Sabbath time is time to honor our creator and savor all the gifts God gives us--nature, the people God has given us to love, food, laughter, music, and especially the gift of time itself, the time just to be.
On the Second Sunday of each month, Christ Presbyterian Church and Trinity United are joining together to offer practice in the art of Sabbath keeping. The Second Sunday Sabbath Celebration is meant to be a time of fellowship during which we can experience different ways of marking out sacred Sabbath time and enjoying restful Sabbath practices. Those who gather will have each other as support for making special time to rest from their week of work so God can work the miracle of renewing rest in them. Each time we meet, participants will take home a Sabbath gift and practical ideas for Sabbath enjoyment at home to help foster a healthy rhythm or work and rest.
Everyone (singles, couples, families, and kids of all age) is welcome. Bring your friends and neighbors. Together we will learn about balancing the rhythm of work and rest in our lives, enjoy meaningful rituals, share light refreshments and just have fun appreciating God's many gifts.
*Note: Martinsville is a part of Bridgewater township.
