Youth activities are provided which includes older students as key participants in teaching their younger peers. Pastor Susan takes special care that the youth feel included in the church activities and that they know they are an important part of God's world.
Sunday School
Youth at Christ Presbyterian Church are encouraged to worship as members of the congregation for the first 15 minutes of the worship service. Their worship experience includes hymn singing, prayer, and a short children's sermon. They then proceed to class.
Nursery
Nursery care is available on request. Happy or sleeping babies are welcome to stay in the sanctuary.
Elementary
In the fall of 2006 we began using the Godly Play curriculum. Godly play is an approach based on Montessori principles - we respond to the child's request to 'help me do it by myself.' This puts the teacher in the role of spiritual supporter or guide who fully accepts that each child has his or her own relationship with God already. The teaching takes place in different ways at the same time: it is multi-modal and multi-sensory. Further information about the program can be obtained from the Godly Play website www.godlyplay.org.uk/whatisgodlyplay.html.
Youth
Older youth are welcome in the sanctuary.
One of the highlights of the youth program is a 30 Hour Famine, an activity to raise money for the hungry of the world and to learn, in person, the feeling of hunger. To experience the feeling of hunger the youth go 30 hours without food. During the 30 hours they engage in different activities, from community service projects to group discussion. In the picture above they experienced carrying fresh water in bukets on their heads, a daily task for many people in developing countries. The 30 Hour Famine activity typically raises several thousand dollars in donations which are contributed to World Vision.
Confirmation Class
Those children who will be confirmed during the year attend special classes and activities. These activities culminate with confirmation in the spring.
